You could have kept the polished version, the one where you were always strong. Instead you let your child see the real road you walked, scars and all. Children don't need a flawless parent; they need an honest one they can model. You just taught them that truth is safe in your house.
Your Practice
- Notice that your honesty gave them permission to be honest too.
- Name out loud what the truth cost you to share and why you shared it anyway.
- Invite their questions instead of closing the subject. Let the door stay open.
- Decide that in your home, the real story is always tellable.
